High School is the stage for consolidating academic knowledge and practical and socio-emotional skills essential for personal development. One of the challenges of this stage of Basic Education is to remain in school; in countries with high levels of inequality, dropout rates are still a tight knot. To combat that, strengthening and innovating the pedagogical proposal for this stage has proven to be essential.
Instituto Natura supports the implementation and expansion of Full-Time High School (EMI), the purpose of which is the comprehensive education of the students. Its structure provides extension of the school day, but also implementation of a curriculum which develops socio-emotional skills, supports the development of a life project and encourages the students to take a leading role.
The EMI experience has shown increase in the sense of belonging to school and greater engagement of the young people with the academic life.
More than 20 Brazilian states are already investing in EMI and are supported by Instituto Natura to expand and strengthen it, in partnership with Instituto Sonho Grande (ISG) and Instituto de Coresponsibilidade pela Educação (ICE). We offer technical, strategic and pedagogical support to the partner states.
The model has shown strength and gained prominence. Today, more than one of every three Brazilian high schools already offers full-time high school education.
Instituto Natura is also working on the development of a strategy to assure racial equity in full-time high school education. The social and racial differences which create obstacles for everyone to have a robust educational trajectory must be addressed.
We encourage the production of scientific evidence on full-time education both internally and through the creation of the Full-time Education Evidence Center (CEEI), an initiative of Insper also supported by Instituto Sonho Grande.
To expand the access to the job market, universities and technical courses, contributing to increased income, achieving higher grades and better results in Enem, reducing cases of teenage pregnancy and malnutrition and even reducing homicide rates are among the numerous pieces of evidence already found on the positive impacts of Full-Time High School Education. In 2024, the states which adopted the model also had outstanding performance in the results of the Basic Education Development Index (IDEB).
To support the qualification of High School Education is a way to make school a space for driving a better future, with opportunities for prosperity at college, in the job market and in other aspects of the students’ lives.
